After an incredible brunch at Manta Restaurant (Mauna Kea Resort) we spent the remainder of the day playing in the sun at Mauna Kea Beach (Kauna’oa Beach). This beach is another gem on the Kohala Coast. With it’s long stretch of white sands and turquoise waters, it’s the perfect place to spend the day. The soft white sand here stretches for about a 1 1/2 which makes it a nice area for a jog along the shoreline. The waters here are relatively calm and is a nice spot for children and adults alike. If you’re looking to boogie board you may be able to catch a few small waves in the afternoon.
We also like it’s proximity to the Mauna Kea Resort! There are beach lounges with umbrellas, a volleyball pit, and swimming pool. If you get hungry, slide on over to their beach cafe (Hau Tree) where you can order from a selection of burgers + fries and other fare….. We like their smoothies!
Kevin spent much of the afternoon teaching Samuel and Audrey how to spot and catch the waves. Their giggles were infectious and after a bit of persistence, they began to get the hang of it!
One of the great things about traveling with extended family is watching the different generations interact with one another. I got a kick out of watching my Dad watch his two youngest grandchildren playing in the ocean.
If you choose to experience the delicious Sunday brunch before you hit the beach, have your server validate your parking ticket —- your parking will be free for the entire day. Otherwise, parking at Mauna Kea Resort is $35 for the day or if you get there early enough you might be able to score free parking in the visitor lot.
A day at Mauna Kea Beach is sure to be a fun one….. Already looking forward to our next visit!
Happy Travels!
