Kona Sunsets

We’re so sad to bid a fond farewell to The Big Island, Hawaii —- actually our family prefers to say, “See You Later!” We couldn’t think of a better way to end our stay than with one last family dinner together and taking in the beautiful sunset….. I like to call them painted skies.

Moriah and I dashed down to the shore and looked on as the sun put on a final show for the evening. Painting the sky in sherbet hues of oranges, pinks and yellows….. the ocean gradually deepening into rich shades of blue and the clouds reflecting those colors. We stood and watched quietly.

If you’re looking for the perfect Big Island sunset, these are some of our favorites!

ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay —- sit and watch the sun slip behind the horizon with silouettes of palm trees along the shore. If you’re lucky enough to get a table, you can also view the sunset as you dine from Lava Lava Beach Club.

Mauna Lani - Our favorite option for dinner sunsets on the Big Island is the Canoe House at Mauna Lani Resort. Make your reservations early and request seating on the grassy area. The sunset views here are amazing and there's a cozy fire pit to sit by afterwords to enjoy drinks.

Mauna Kea Beach —- Love to listen to the melody of the ocean waves here during sunset.

Waialea Beach —- Also called Beach 69 for the Highway Marker you should turn at. This is a smaller beach with spectacular golden sunsets!

Kealakekua Bay —- This is a great option if you find yourself further down the Kona-Kailua coast.

Kua Bay - Beautiful any time of day!

Old Kona Airport State Beach

Kikaua Point Beach Park —- Access to Kikaua Point Beach Park is through the Kukio Golf Resort. Consider stopping off at Costco for all you need for a sunset picnic!

There are really no bad places along the Kona Coast to catch a sunset….. just take the time to stop and take it all in.

Happy Travels!
