A Picturesque Stroll in Paris's Tuileries Gardens

Jardin des Tuileries

48.8635° N, 2.3275° E

One of our favorite things about Paris are the parks and spaces to sit and savor time to rest…… or if you’re like me, people watch. I have to admit, I like to sit and eavesdrop on conversations in French —- it gives me an opportunity to practice (don’t judge me).

On this day, we trekked across town to Jardin des Tuileries (a good resting stop after a day at the Louvre). The Tuileries were originally the site of tile factories. In 1564, Catherine de Médicis ordered the construction of the Palais de Tuileries - which became the residence of French dignitaries. In 1664, Louis XIV chose to completely change the style of the gardens and hired André Le Nôtre to redesign it in a French style — much of that footprint designed by Le Nôtre is still present today for visitors.

One of two beautiful fountains in the Tuileries — Octagonal Basin

There are always plenty of green chairs scattered around the fountains and throughout the park. On this occasion, to one side, we had a group of teenagers having an animated conversation as they listened to some French Hip-Hop music and on the other side a kissing couple. Opposite us, two elderly ladies smartly dressed in tweed skirts and heels —- I was imagining they were sisters or childhood friends catching up on the happenings of their day.

Kevin used the break to catch up on a little shut-eye……..

And, I decided maybe a nap might not be such a bad idea……. but, not too long! There’s more to see!

After our brief nap, we continued our walk towards The Louvre and came upon this man creating les bulles with his special wand. The bubbles he created were amazing — large, shimmery bubbles in iridescent rainbow shades. And, the joy on the faces of the children chasing them was infectious! I loved standing there watching them squeal as they chased them. What is it about bubbles that brings such joy?!

We finally decided it was time to head back to the Marais — after all, it was time to choose a place for dinner! But not before a few glimpses of The Louvre…….

And, Kevin’s parting headstand —- something that has become a tradition each time we leave the Tuileries.

If you choose to visit Jardin des Tuileries, you might consider timing it with Fête des Tuileries (June - August) — a portion of the gardens are set up with fun rides and games that both children and adults can enjoy. Or perhaps you are going in early winter! La Magie de Noël might be just the thing for you — the garden becomes a winter Holiday wonderland complete with ice skating rink, specialty foods and crafts. La Magie de Noël des Tuileries usually takes place the last week of November through the first week of January. Nevertheless, whenever you do decide to travel to the Tuileries, we’re sure your visit will be a memorable one.

Happy Travels!
